This recipe makes 3 cups of pizza sauce. This is a great recipe to make ahead and freeze so that you always have sauce on hand when you need it. To much sauce? This recipe is easily split in half by using a 15oz can of crushed tomatoes, 3oz of tomato paste, and half the spices.

    Yield: 3 generous cups
    Prep Time: 2 minutes
    Cook Time: 15-30 minutes

Ingredients
  • 28oz can of crushed tomatoes
  • 6 ounce can of tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp canola oil, olive oil, or butter
  • 2-4 gloves of garlic, minced (we like a lot of garlic)
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 3/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 2 tsp sugar
Directions
  1. In a medium sauce pan, add oil and garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes on medium heat, until garlic is fragrant.
  2. Add tomato paste and cook an additional 2 minutes.
  3. Add crushed tomatoes, spices, and sugar. Stir to combine.
  4. Cover pot and allow contents to come to a simmer. Simmer for 15-30 minutes. The longer the simmer time, the more developed the flavors will be.
  5. Use immediately. Store remaining leftovers in the fridge once cooled for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for longer term storage.
How to Freeze this Recipe
  • Allow sauce to cool completely.
  • Divide into desired quantities - I use 1/2 pint mason jars filled 3/4 of the way. This is enough sauce for about 2 pizzas for us.
  • Be sure to leave some room for expansion when frozen if using glass or plastic containers.
  • You can also portion into small zip top bags and smooth flat for small space storage.
  • Remember to label and date your containers. Use within 6 months for best quality.
  • To Thaw - leave in fridge overnight, or room temp for a few hours. I have successfully defrosted in the microwave as well.
  • If you find the sauce is watery upon thawing, heat it on low in a sauce pan until desired consistency is reached.
